I decided to give epilating a go due to the fact that I was sick of constantly needing to shave and dealing with the irritation which always an unpleasant aftermath. I chose the Philips Satinelle Compact Epilator because I read it’s a good first device for anyone new to epilating as it’s simple to use and ideal for delicate skin types.
Inside the box, there’s the epilator itself and an efficiency cap which is for sensitive areas. I immediately admired its portable size as it’s always good to have tools that can be easily taken on trips or vacations without worrying about space and weight.

What You Should Know Before Using an Epilator
Exfoliation is an important and very necessary step to getting the smooth results you expect to have from using an epilator. You should exfoliate on a regular basis and also right before each epilation.
Hairs as short as 0.5mm are removed from the root with the Philips Sanitelle epilator
Hairs should not be longer than the length of 1.5cm – hairs that are too long will make an extremely painful procedure and may not even remove the hairs effectively from the root, instead of ripping them halfway – Not what we want!
Optimal hair length for epilation is 3-4mm.
Take a hot bath before epilating to open the pores. Then make sure your skin is completely dry before bringing the device near to your skin.
The efficiency cap provides a gentler operation of hair removal making the device suitable for those with delicate skin and areas of the body that are more tender like the knees, ankles, underarms and bikini line.
The very first time you epilate, you can expect red bumps. I got them myself but they were completely gone by the next day and didn’t occur again after future epilating sessions.
It has an extra-long cord, which makes it easy to maneuver around the bathroom. It’s actually quite loud, so depending on how good the insulation is in your house and how heavy your family members sleep, you may want to pick and choose the best times to epilate.
This device is super easy to use and is an ideal tool for those who are new to epilating. It glides smoothly and doesn’t pinch the skin.
Make sure your skin is clean and dry before use. This corded epilator is suitable for only dry use – when the skin is completely dry it can pick up all the hairs much easier from the first pass over an area. If the skin isn’t completely dry it won’t work effectively.
The size, shape, and design have been created attentively. It’s a small portable size that can easily be traveled with. The rounded shaped body fits perfectly in the palm of the hand while the ergonomic grip makes it really comfortable to handle.
It has 2-speed settings which can be easily adjusted with a simple switch. The efficiency cap makes it possible to epilate sensitive areas on the body like the ankles, knees, underarms, and the bikini line. The slower speed is the gentlest approach when removing the unwanted hair and the high speed is the most efficient and will get the job done super-fast.
It’s painful of course as hairs are removed from the root, but this is manageable for me as I know that I don’t have to worry about hair removal for the next 4 weeks! Some people experience a tingling and find the epilation to not be painful but just uncomfortable. Pain is different from person to person depending on the individual’s tolerance, the time of the month and also the area that’s being epilated. The more often you use the device the less painful it’ll be. This is because hairs are becoming finer and sparser over time and I think it’s also because you know what to expect and get used to what it feels like. At the very start, it’s quite a shock to be quite honest, especially if you transition from using a razor to epilating because shaving is completely painless and epilating is a whole new ballgame.
Cleaning the Epilator
This device has a fully removal washable head which makes cleaning an absolute breeze and ensures a hygienic practice. It’d be ideal if the manufacturer included a suitable cleaning brush but I found something that does the job just fine. I use a soft tooth brush dipped in an antibacterial solution and brush it over the tweezers.
To Sum Up
This small but powerful device has changed hair removal completely for me. I used to get irritated skin frequently from shaving and although this takes some time to get used to, it’s definitely much better than shaving. Who wants to worry about shaving twice a week to maintain smooth stubble free skin? – Not me! I’d prefer using my epilator once every so often, dealing with the pain and enjoy my super smooth skin for a longer period of time!
