Electro-Optical-Synergy: ELOS Hair Removal Review

Quick-quiz "My perfect hair remover"

What is ELOS Hair Removal?

ELOS laser is an innovative technology which incorporates the benefits of both photo and laser epilation. The method was invented by SYNERON Medical, a company from Israel.

A machine of the treatment directs an intense pulsed light and radio frequency to the treatment area where electrical and optical energy works together to destroy the hair follicle.

ELOS, laser, and IPL hair removal methods are highly comparable as they all involve directing energy in the form of a light or laser to destroy the melanin in the hair in its active growth phase. They all involve a series of ongoing treatments to eliminate the need to perform ongoing hair removal. The light energy targets dark melanin, which is in both the hair and the skin and this is why darker skin tones need to be careful when using these devices the light could direct onto the darker skin color as well as the dark hair.

It takes 5 to 8 procedures to completely remove the unwanted hair.

Benefits of the Elos Technology

This epilation method has major benefits which:

  • Does not harm your health
  • Does not cause any pain
  • Does not provoke irritation or any other kind of discomfort
  • Removes all types of hair
  • Removes ingrown hair
  • Stimulates collagen production (which makes the skin smooth)

After going through the series of necessary procedures, unwanted hair will be forever gone, including the peach fuzz, which no other kind of hair removal method can eliminate.

Although it is difficult to imagine a painless hair removal procedure, ELOS laser hair removal does just that. Thanks to a combination of different energy flows, you will only have warm and slight tingling sensations, even in the most painful bikini area. To make the treatment comfortable even for those with a low pain tolerance, the machine can be set to the lowest energy levels, and 40 minutes before the session you will use an anesthetic.

The procedure does not injure the skin, nor does it leave any scars or burns; and, which is the most important, you will not have to worry about being in the sun, as there is no danger of getting any pigmented spots. The redness and swelling caused by the treatment will pass in 3 hours.

An ELOS hair removal session is always preceded by a discussion with an experienced specialist who will consider your individual characteristics and choose the intensity level that will be most suitable for you.

Contraindications to the ELOS Laser Hair Removal

Before the treatment, the cosmetologist will find out if you have any contraindications to the procedure. You will not be able to have ELOS hair removal if you have or are going through any of the following:

  • pregnancy or lactation
  • cardiac stimulator
  • cochlear or a metallic implant
  • allergic to light
  • diabetes
  • laser treatment or a chemical peel in the past three months
  • hyperthermia
  • skin infections
  • cancer

  • keloid scars
  • systemic lupus erythematosus
  • hemolysis
  • epilepsy
  • porphyria
  • serious diseases of internal organs

Note that if you have tattoos, scars, moles, bruises, scratches or warts on the target skin areas, you should cover those problem areas with plaster during the session.

Also, remember that ELOS epilation is incompatible with other types of epilation.

Me My Elos Cartridge 100,000 Light Pulses (Fits Me 1st Gen Devices)

This is an IPL lamp replacement for Me My Elos first Gen devices with the white logo circle. It will fit the machine properly and provide the same results as the original that comes with the device. This is just the replacement you need when your original has run out of light pulses to carry out your series of treatments. It is a 100,000 IPL lamp with an easy installation.

What Happens Throughout the ELOS Procedure?

The hair on the target zone must be shaved off with a men’s or women’s razor or a men’s or women’s electric razor 2 or 3 days before the session so that by the time of the procedure it would have grown evenly to a length of 2-3 mm.

Before the session, a gel is applied to the treatment area. You will wear glasses that will protect your eyes from the flashes of light. During the treatment, the cosmetologist will direct light pulses to the hair which will go on for 30-40 minutes. After the session, a cream will be applied to soften the skin.

Hair grows from “roots” which are called follicles; those of which are active during the time of the session will be destroyed, and the hair will fall out after 7-10 days. However, the unwanted hair will not give up so easily. The follicles that were passive at the time of the treatment, will “wake up” and you will need another treatment to destroy them. So, the treatment needs to be repeated until all the unwanted hair is gone. The time between sessions should be about 7 weeks, and the hair that will appear during this period should be shaved off or removed with a depilatory cream.

How Many Sessions are Needed?

As with other types of epilation, the number of sessions is different for everyone. It depends on the skin color and sensitivity, and of course the hair color and structure. On average, if you do the procedures in a beauty salon, for leg and bikini zones you will need 8-12 sessions, that, together with breaks, will take 1-2 years. At-home procedures will take more time, as ELOS devices for home use, are, for safety reasons, not as powerful as their salon “cousins”.

If ELOS epilation is performed well, hair will not grow back in the treated areas for five years or more. After that, the follicles may become active again, in which case it will be necessary to have preventive procedures.

ELOS Machines for Home Use

If you are set on implementing the epilation procedure at home, you should ensure you have  all the necessary equipment, such as:

  • a home ELOS hair removal machine;
  • a cooling cream;
  • protective glasses.

Also, you are likely to need a replacement cartridge with more pulses as their number on one device is limited.

The most popular ELOS devices for home use are made by an Israeli company Syneron. They are rather compact, safe and easy to use. Although like all at-home devices, they are not as powerful as the machines used in professional salons; but the ELOS hair removal cost turns out to be cheaper. So if you have the time on your hands, then it’s a more economical way to go about permanent hair removal.

Preparing for an At-Home ELOS Laser Session

  • No laser treatments or chemical peels on target skin areas for 3-4 months (!) before the procedure.
  • It is not recommended to get a suntan or do any cosmetic injections in the treatment area for two weeks before the procedure.
  • A few days before the ELOS procedure try not to expose the skin to extreme temperatures of cold or heat.
  • Shave the target area a couple of days before so that by the time of the session the hair is 1-3 mm long.

ELOS Hair Removal Session at Home

Before you start the procedure, read the instructions carefully and choose the necessary mode in accordance with your hair and skin color. For the first session of ELOS home hair removal set the machine to the minimal intensity level to check your skin’s sensitivity.

Apply the device to your skin and glide it in any direction. Keep in mind that the manufacturers do not recommend to go over the same spot more than once during a single session.

Beware that ELOS hair removal side effects can occur if the method is not followed accurately. It is important to understand what can and cannot be done before going ahead with the treatment. ELOS hair removal side effects most commonly include pigmentation disorders; either lightening or darkening of the skin.  Primary reasons that cause side effects are by using the incorrect laser settings and improper use of the device in general. So when implementing the method at home, be sure to have understood all the safety measures.

Bikini: The bikini zone, especially the deep bikini area, is one of the most sensitive epilation areas. If your skin is extra tender, apply an anesthetic cream to the treatment area half an hour before the procedure.

Although manufacturers guarantee absolute painlessness of the procedure thanks to a special technique which controls the intensity of the treatment and cools the skin surface if necessary, the reaction to the epilation varies for every person. During the procedure, one might have prickling or burning sensations in the treatment area. If you can tolerate them, go on with the session, but you feel strong discomfort or pain, switch the device to a less intensive mode or stop the procedure altogether.

Usually, at-home ELOS in the bikini zone (including deep bikini) takes no more than 20 minutes depending on your skill and the intensity level.

Legs: The same rules as for the bikini area, apply to other body parts. To remove hair on the legs takes 20-30 minutes on average. Some experts advise taking a special two-phase course for the legs. The first phase consists of three procedures done at intervals of two months. Then follows a 3-4-month break during which passive hair follicles begin to “wake up”. As soon as the hair starts to grow again, it is time for the fourth procedure. This will be enough for some people, while others might need 2 or 3 more sessions. It all depends on the intensity of the hair growth.

Armpits:  The removal procedure in the armpits takes around 15-20 minutes. Apart from eliminating the hair, ELOS treatment has one more benefit – it suspends the work of sweat glands. And, unlike with other methods (e.g., special injections), the effect lasts for a long time.

Facial Hair Removal

Eyebrows:  To make it easier to get ready for work and to eliminate the need to continuously use eyebrow tweezers to keep them in order, you can get your eyebrows epilated with ELOS. Only three procedures at six-month intervals will give your eyebrows the perfect shape. The biggest advantage of ELOS eyebrow hair removal is the almost total absence of swelling or irritation in the treatment area.

Chin and upper lip hair:  A lot of women have to pluck not only the eyebrows but the chin and the upper lip as well. Epilation will solve this problem once and for all. You will be happy with both the process and the results, as the procedure is painless and eliminates even light and peach fuzz hair. Typically, it takes two to four sessions to get rid of the hair in this area.

Cheekbones:  Hair growth on the cheekbones is something unfamiliar to many women. However, those whose hormonal imbalance led to hair growth in this area know very well how difficult it is to get rid of. Electrolysis hair removal is painful and may leave scars, while photo epilation is not effective for light peach fuzz hair. Thankfully, ELOS epilation has come to rescue. The session may last for 15-20 minutes, and one might need two or three (sometimes more) procedures at the interval of several months.

After the At-Home ELOS Laser Procedure

During the first three days after the procedure try not to expose the treated areas to hot temperatures: stay away from places like saunas, pools, gyms, beaches, or solariums.

Before going out apply an SPF 30 sunscreen to open treated areas.

Do not use a depilatory cream, pluck, or wax in between the ELOS treatment sessions. You may only shave!

After four or five procedures, hair growth will slow down and will become thin and colorless. Now you may have ELOS hair removal sessions only if the need arises, or by way of prevention.

ELOS for Men

Some men feel the need to get rid of the unwanted hair due to their physical peculiarities or professional needs, while others become really annoyed at the irritation caused by regular shaving. The ELOS technology hair removal treatment is perfectly suitable for men as well. The areas that men typically want to deprive of hair are the back, chest, armpits, face, and neck. The rules that apply to the for women are the same for men, the only difference being the duration of the procedure, which is longer for men due to the excessive hairiness of men’s skin. Anyway, in the case of men, individual skin characteristics, hair structure, and hair color should also be considered when choosing the perfect hair removal level.
